Sherina Tan is currently based in Singapore as a full-time piano teacher, teaching advanced students up to diploma levels, as well as intermediate students and beginners as young as four years old. Sherina began her piano teaching career since 2001, and enjoys immensely the cultivation of musical growth, interest and talent in students.
Education Sherina started learning the piano at the age of 5. Spending a great part of her childhood in Beijing, P.R.China, her being taught by a graduate of Beijing Central Conservatory of Music led her to have a solid and sound technical foundation at the piano, while her love for piano and music were being cultivated. Sherina graduated with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, obtaining the highest score for the 1997 class-year, at the International School of Beijing. In 2001, Sherina graduated with a B.A. in Music and Mathematics, achieving High Honors in Music, from Wesleyan University, USA. Furthermore, in recognition for her musical achievements at Wesleyan University, she was awarded the Leavell Memorial Prize. Sherina’s academic excellence also made her a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After her graduation, with interest in expanding her piano repertoire, as well as her love for travel, Sherina studied piano performance for a year at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Sherina’s belief in continual learning and improvement spurred her to undertake graduated studies with Professor Catherine Kautsky starting 2004, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. During her course of study, she had the opportunity to play in a masterclass for reknown pianist Jeffrey Siegel. In May 2006, Sherina graduated with a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Piano Teaching In her teaching, although Sherina recognizes that the attainment of certification through external music examinations is important for a student’s motivation and musical growth, she strongly believes that learning the piano should be an enriching and enjoyable experience, and not merely a “paper-chase” phenomenon. Sherina wants her students to be enriched with a greater knowledge in, as well as appreciation and love for music. If the student is a child, Sherina communicates with parents on a regular basis about their child’s progress, and is always open to feedback and suggestions. Although strict in her musical requirements and in her demands for disciplined regular practice from her students, Sherina’s warm personality and her belief that every student is a unique individual, makes her well-loved by her students and their parents. Sherina believes that it is her teaching approach that leads her students to fulfill their potential in music, and naturally get the good results that they deserve in music examinations!
